rear axle came out 06 660

rear axle came out 06 660
Got stuck today and between that and gettin it out, the rear axle popped out. I think all that happened is the circlip let go, but before I could figure out what was wrong I was home (only a few hundred yards). Anyway I took it apart and the splines on each side of the circlip are ate off, about 1/16th on each side. My question is, does mean the joint is no good or can I get away with that little bit of damage? Lots of metal filings so I drained the rear end and am gonna flush it with diesel fuel, that would be ok, right? BTW it happened on the drivers side if it makes a difference. Thanks, Dave
