Basic Axle Problem

I have an 06 Rhino 660. Everything is stock. I have about 3,000 miles on it. I use it for deer hunting. I don't baby it but don't abuse it. Recently I got stuck in a very wet field. I realized that the left rear axle was not pulling. (drivers rear side) Later I checked and I could push the axle back and forth(not in and out); it felt like maybe 1/4 to 1/2 inch. I could not move the other side. I came to the forums and determined it must be a broken axle. I ordered one and today attempted to change it. After jacking up the Rhino I was surprised that I could not freely rotate that particlar tire (if the axle was in fact broken). I took the tire off and the axle seemed tight. I cranked up the Rhino and while the tires were off the concrete I put it in gear. Both axles were turning. I took the axle out and it looked OK. I put it back in and it is loose in the differential compared to the other. Does anyone have any thoughts on why the axle was not pulling or what could cause that? Should I take the covers off the CV joint and see if the bearings are OK? I just joined and this is my first thread, so be gentle with me! Thanks.

Possibly broke the cage, the axel shouldn't move when it's in there.
check out thecvman.com for instructions on cv's, once you do it, there easy.
