Transmission Shifting Issues

I have a 2006 Rhino 450 the last time I tried to drive it, I was unable get it to shift into Reverse. The shifting lever appears to be in the correct place and the linkage seems to be working but the Reverse Light Does not come on and when I attempt to drive it lunges forward. I recenty got this Rhino from my father and when I told him that the reverse gear no longer worked he informed me that he has had this excat same problem at least twice since he purchased the Rhino new. Whe nI asked how he fixed it, he said he didn't ever really do anything specific to fix it, that it just somehow started working again. Can anyone think of anything that might cause this type of problem to occure? Any ideas what I might try to figure out why the reverse gear is not working at this moment in time. I have only attempted to drive it two times since reverse stopped working and it has not been moved from its current location either. I need to reverse it/(back it)out of my garage before I can try to drive it again.
Thanks in advance for any legitimate reccomendations of help (other than comments like "sounds like a transmission problem" or "sounds like the reverse gear isnt working anymore").
