each is a little different

you need to do some test runs and see which works best without popping at WFO up the jet until popping stops

start with a 165-170 main
45-50 pilot and two turns out on the idle mix screw.
maybe needle shim swap--- thick on bottom and thin on top for midrange

this a very basic start

Thanks ill be starting up the motor tonite to tune it Someone told me too start with a 185 that seems kinda phat to me. I allso read that you loose power by removing the air box lid because the stock carb needs it on to work properly because its a vacum carb .Is that true or do most 686 motors run with it off?

Most of us running HP 686 motors get a whole new carb and filter setup, say a FCR41 or Mikuni 45

get a hard mount filter for your box, and open the top opening up ( rais tube mod)

this will be an improvement, and it will get alot of carb noise.

you can put a 1" hole in the lower front of the airbox and this will cancel some air noise from the carb scoop.

however changing the carb and filter will help with your 686.
